Why we're stopping
We are a small community, and a dedicated one, but there is only so
much of us to go around. Too many things were happening at once, and
Verplex was taking development time away from work we are better
placed to do well. Rather than let it drift along getting a fraction
of the attention it needs, we would rather say plainly that it is
stopping.
There is also an honest limits argument. AI and software are areas
we can genuinely work in. Hardware is a different unsolved problem,
and not one we are familiar with. Building glasses well means solving
optics, thermals, batteries, manufacturing, and supply chains —
none of which we have experience in, and all of which would have to go
right. Taking that on at the same time as our model work was not a
realistic plan.
Where that time is going
Into the models and the research. That is
Deriva-1,
Hikaru-1, and the
ERL work underneath them, plus
Kova on the software side. This continues the
order of priority we set out in
evaluating scope; cancelling
Verplex is that decision followed through rather than a new
direction.
What this means for Nero
The Nero Series was described as being
built for Verplex and for robotics. The robotics half of that is
unchanged — a model that unifies vision, voice and language and
can act in the physical world is still worth building, and it never
depended on us making the glasses ourselves.
Not necessarily forever
Cancelled means we have stopped, not that the idea was wrong. If we
grow, or if the hardware side becomes something we can take on
properly rather than partially, Verplex is welcome to come back. We
would rather return to it deliberately than keep it nominally alive
on no one's calendar.
Thanks for following along with it. Have a good weekend, everyone.
